Z-4 1A Acorus calamus ‘Tanomanoyuki’ (‘Tanomanoyuki’ sweet flag), to 9”, yellow stripes in foliage. Z-4 2 Acorus gramineus ‘Variegatus’ (White-striped Japanese Sweet flag), 6-12”, hardy here for last 3 years. Adapts well to wet locations, best in light shade. Z-4 3 Andropogon gerardii (Big blue stem), native prairie grass, 6-10’x3’, full sun best. 4 Anthoxanthum odoratum (Sweet vernal grass), 8’, bunch type grass, native, fragrant especially the roots, full sun, can naturalize. 5 Arrhenatherum bilbosum ‘Variegatum’ (Bulbous oat grass), 15”x12”, fragrant, full-part sun, lovely in the spring and fall, goes dormant in hot summers. Z-4 6 Arundo donax (Giant reed grass), rated for Zone 6 but has done great here since 1996, moist locations, 15-20’x4’, mulch heavily for winter protection full sun. 7 Arundo donax ‘Variegata’ (Striped reed grass), less hardy than above, 8-12’, moist locations, full sun, mulch. Z-6 9 Briza media (Rattle snake grass), very adaptable and easy to grow, bunch type, great dried flower full sun, prefers rich moist loam, 2’x2’. Z-4 12 Calamagrostis acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’ (Feather reed grass), one of the first grasses to green-up in the spring, up-right and columnar, 5’x2 ½’, full sun. Z-4 13 Calamagrostis acutiflora ‘Stricta’ (Feather reed grass), a little taller than 12, later to flower, full sun. Z-4 14 Calamagrostis a. ‘Overdam’ (Variegated feather reed grass), columnar, full sun best, 5’x2 ½’. Z-4 15 Calamagrostis Brachytricha (‘Autumn blooming reed grass), a real fall beauty, rose-lavender flowers, winter interest, 4’x2’, full sun or part shade. Z-4 16 Carex elata ‘Bowles Golden Sedge’ 2’, yellow & green var., light shade. Z-5 18 Carex muskingumensis (Palm sedge), somewhat tropical appearance, native moist woodland plant, excellent ground cover, invasive, sun /shade, 2-3’x2’. Z-5 19 Carex nigra (Black sedge), dark green sedge that spreads, good as ground cover, 1’ wide spreading, part-full sun. 21 Chasmanthum latifolium (Northern seaoats), 2’, bamboo like foliage, showy drooping flowers, leaves green in summer, copper in fall and brown in winter, native woodland grass, sun to shade, partial shade best for color. 22 Deschampsia cespitosa (Tufted hairgrass, fairy wand grass), tolerates shade, native woodland grass, works well with hostas and ferns, ground cover, 2-3’, sun –part sun. Z-4 22A Deschampsia c. ‘Goldgehaenge’ (Gold pendant tufted hairgrass), sun to part shade, 2-3’. 23 Deschampsia c. ‘Northern Lights’ (Tufted hairgrass), variegated form, 6”, full-part sun. Z-4 23A Elymus arenarius ‘Glaucus’ (Blue Lyme grass), metallic blue foliage, can be invasive and spreading, drought-resistant, excellent in sand, 1-2’, full sun to light shade. Z-4 25 Festuca amethystina ‘Superba’ (Blue sheep’s grass), full sun, 8-12”. Z-4-8 26 Festuca cinerea ‘Solling’ (Solling fescue), does not develop seed heads, full sun, good ground cover, 8-10”h. Z-4 27 Festuca glauca ‘Blausilber’ (Blue-silver fescue), very silvery, 6”, full sun, needs good drainage. 28 Festuca g. ‘Elijah Blue’ (Fescue), soft powdery blue, to 8” tall. 29 Festuca g. ‘Sea Urchin” (Blue fescue), silvery blue, medium texture, 6-12”, full sun. 30 Festuca ovine glauca (Blue fescue), self seeds, 6-7”, sun. 31A Hakonechloa macra (Hakone grass), elegant glossy green foliage, fall color, part shade, good drainage necessary, moist soil, 1-3’, mulch heavily for winter survival. Z-4 33 Helictotrichon sempervirens ‘Sapphire’ (Blue oat grass var. ), great blue foliage, 1-2’, needs good drainage, sun to shade. 34 Hierchloe ordorata (Holy grass, vanilla grass), native, moist soil or bogs, fragrant leaves and roots, 1’ and lies down, used braided as incense in ceremonies by some Native Americans, sun. Z-4 35 Hystrix patula (Bottle Brush grass), native woodland grass, tolerates dry shade, 3’, can self seed. Z-4. 36 Imperata cylindrica aka Imperata rubra ‘Red Barron’ (Japanese blood grass), 1-2’, sun, part shade, massing, blood-red foliage color intensifies in Fall. Z-5 36B Juncus effusus ‘Spiralis’ (Corkscrew Rush), 1’, almost ever green tightly coiled foliage, used in fresh and dried arrangements, sun/part shade, plant at waters edge. Z-5 37 Koeleria cristata aka K. pyramidata (June grass), native, dry prairie, open woods, 1-2’, sun. Z-5 38 Koeleria glauca (Blue hairgrass), infertile, best on alkaline soil, short lived, 6-12”, good edger, sun. 39 Liriope spicata (Creeping liriope), dark green grass like ground cover, vigorous grower, shady moist site, 10”, lavender flowers summer to fall.
